BOX SIZE

Consider using small boxes for heavy items, such as utensils and dishes, books and electronic equipment.  Use large boxes for blankets, towels and bedding.  A good balance of large to small boxes will ensure that you can optimally stack you unit.

Do not use plastic bags for packing as these easily rip and lack ventilation resulting in mold and mildew.

USE WARDROBE BOXES

We recommend hanging wardrobe boxes.  Not only do these all you to reduce packing and unpacking time for your clothes, but you can also use these boxes to hang drapes and garage items.  There is nothing worse than having to spend hours ironing clothes or drapes when you can hang them up and be move in ready.

DON'T OVERFILL OR UNDER PACK YOUR BOXES

An overfilled box will bulge once things settle out.  This creates instability when stacking, potentially resulting in an unsafe packing situation.  In addition, you can injure yourself trying to pick up and load heavy boxes.

Under packing boxes will allow the contents to shift or get crushed under the weight of heavy boxes.  If you have a few boxes that are under packed, consider stuffing them with old newspaper or packing peanuts to fill empty spaces and not add significant weight.

TAPE BOXES

Only use packaging tape.  This is critical.  Packaging tape is designed to help maintain the structure of the box and protect its contents.

LABEL BOXES

Be sure to spend the necessary time to label your boxes.  It can be a nightmare trying to locate that one item you need in a storage unit full of boxes when you have no idea the contents of each box.  We strongly recommend that you label each box with a number.  On a piece of paper or spreadsheet, detail out what is included in that particular box.  Then, generally label each box by room and description so you can easily track down what you are looking for.

Lastly, label each box with arrows to mark the stacking direction.  You do not want your glassware or other household items damaged because they were stored wrong

PREP ANY LAWN EQUIPMENT

If you are storing lawn equipment or items with a motor, such as lawnmower, weed eaters or leaf blowers, be sure to drain the fuel tanks before storing them in your unit.  This will prevent all your stored items from smelling like fuel and protect your items should that fuel somehow leak.

PREPARE YOUR FURNITURE

Cover your furniture in plastic and store cushions and pillows in plastic bags.
