How to Prepare for Moving Day: Tips
Published on 5/20/2019
Moving to a new home or office can be quite the adventure. However, it can be easy to become overwhelmed when there is so much to do. The more prepared you are, the easier the move will be. Here are our tips to ensuring your moving day is a success.
ORGANIZE EARLY
Preparation is the key to reduce stress and anxiety when it comes to moving. And while it may seem that your actual moving day is some time away, that day approaches very fast with so much to do. We recommend the creation of a full moving timeline with a week by week to do list to ensure everything you need to get done, gets done. Start the list early and mark the items off the list once completed. An example
checklist can be found here.
DE-CLUTTER YOUR HOME
Before you get overwhelmed with gathering boxes and packing, why not spend some time sorting through your stuff to determine what you want to keep and what you do not. This can be a great time to donate unwanted items to your favorite local charity. If there are items that you just cannot part with but do not necessarily want them in your new home, a
storage unit can be the perfect solution.
PACKING
Pack like the pros do. If you have ever watched a moving company pack, you will notice they pack the heaviest items in the smaller boxes and the lighter items in large boxes. There is not much worse than spending hours packing only to have boxes to heavy to pick up or to uneven in weight to properly transport.
Pack all items by room and label the box with the contents using a marker. It is best to pack all essentials together and all non-essentials together and label accordingly. Properly organized and labeled boxes will ensure that you favorite coffee cup is easily located the morning after your move or your bathroom towels are easily locatable after the first shower in your new home. Here is a list of
packing tips for your use.
MOVING DAY
Remember, moving day always takes longer and requires more effort than anticipated. If you are not using a moving company, we recommend that you start early and limit transition time between trips. The quickest way to run out of daylight is to spend to much time driving back and forth between your old home and your new home. Gather your friends and family and load up as many cars/trucks/vans as possible. Spend less time driving and more time loading and unloading and you might even have a chance to relax in your new home for a few minutes before crashing.
